The golden apple is a legendary fruit from Greek mythology, closely linked to Eris, the goddess of Discord. One day, when all the gods were invited to the wedding of Thetis and Peleus, Eris was the only one forgotten. Furious, she decided to take revenge: she threw a golden apple inscribed “For the fairest” into the middle of the banquet. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite immediately fought over the fruit, each convinced she was its rightful recipient. Unable to choose between the three goddesses, Zeus entrusted the decision to the young Trojan prince Paris, an episode known as the “Judgment of Paris.” He was faced with three promises: Hera offered him power, Athena wisdom and military victory, while Aphrodite promised him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world. Seduced by this last promise, Paris gave the golden apple to Aphrodite. But the most beautiful of mortals, Helen, is already married to the Greek king Menelaus. Her abduction by Paris is facilitated by Aphrodite but provokes the wrath of the Greeks, who form a coalition and set sail for Troy with the aim of rescuing Helen and destroying the city. This is the beginning of the Trojan War, recounted in Homer’s Iliad, where many heroes clash (among them Achilles, Ajax, Odysseus, and Hector).
Thus, the simple golden apple becomes the spark that ignites one of the greatest conflicts of antiquity.
