La canopée est la partie de la forêt correspondant à la cime des arbres les plus hauts d’un peuplement forestier. On parle également de l’étage supérieur de la forêt.
En contact direct avec l’atmosphère et les rayons du soleil, elle constitue un écosystème à part entière. La canopée est un environnement qui présente une biodiversité et une productivité biologique très riches.
Longtemps consacré aux forêts tropicales humides, le terme canopée s’applique aujourd’hui à toutes les formations forestières et peut aussi être utilisé pour désigner les algues géantes flottant à la surface des océans.
