La Ballade des dames du temps jadis, du recueil Le Testament, est un des plus beaux poèmes de François Villon. Cette ballade lyrique et mélancolique, composée de trois huitains et un quatrain en octosyllabes, évoque le temps qui passe au travers des destins de 12 femmes célèbres décédées.

Dites-moi où, en quel pays
Est Flora, la belle romaine,
Alcibiade, et Thaïs
Qui fut sa cousine germaine ?
La nymphe Écho, parlant quant on fait du bruit
Au-dessus d’une rivière ou d’un étang
