Martha Jane Cannary ou Martha Cannary, plus connue sous le surnom de Calamity Jane, est une personnalité de la conquête de l’Ouest née le 1er mai 1852 près de Princeton dans le Missouri et morte le 1er août 1903 à Deadwood dans le Dakota du Sud.
Après avoir connu la notoriété de son vivant par sa participation à la conquête de l’Ouest et son rôle lors des guerres indiennes au cours desquelles elle s’est prétendue éclaireur pour l’armée américaine avec le général George Custer, elle devient le personnage principal d’un spectacle fondé sur sa propre légende, le Wild West Show. Ce spectacle va accroître cette légende du vivant de Calamity Jane, rendant ardue la tâche de la démêler de la réalité. Elle meurt pauvre, aveugle, alcoolique, mais toujours aussi célèbre, en 1903 à Terry dans le Dakota du Sud.
