“If life is only a passage, on this passage at least sow flowers.”

Montaigne

“The heavenly passages” is a collection inspired by the different doors leading to dreamlike but also personal worlds, paths that lead to the full awareness of oneself and the world. These bridges carry us to supreme havens, higher ends, ultimate goals. They touch History, Spirituality, Fantasy. Let’s take these passages and we enter intimate and fanciful countries.

The name comes from an ancient Islamic belief from the Middle Ages that souls resided in this place until the Day of Judgment. This location holds particular significance as it is believed to be the site where the Ark of the Covenant was kept; however, some theories suggest a cave lies directly beneath it, of which only a slight depression remains visible. No archaeological research has been undertaken for religious reasons, and this is not expected to change in the near future. According to some Muslim interpretations, on the Day of Judgment, the Kaaba stone will join the Foundation Rock here. The Talmud describes this stone as the center of the world and as covering the Abyss (the Sumerian Apsu) containing the raging waters of the flood. The cave was venerated as early as 902 CE, according to Ibn al-Faqih. Similarly, Muslim tradition places it at the center of the world and above a bottomless well with waters flowing towards Paradise. A palm tree is said to emerge from the river of Paradise here to support the stone. Noah is said to have landed here after the Flood. The souls of the dead can be heard awaiting Judgment Day.
